The LeadAward, Germany’s leading award for fotography, media and visual communication has just been presented for 2014. STERN, BEEF! and FLOW were able to win one gold, three silver and two bronze awards for Gruner + Jahr.

The best image of the year was to be seen in STERN magazine: On Friday the Bengali photographer Taslima Akhter received the award in Gold for “Umarmung” (Embrace), published in issue no. 21, from the hands of Federal Foreign Minster Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Further images published in STERN also received silver and bronze in the category “Photo of the year”: “Hungermarsch” (Hunger March) from the United Nations Relief and Work Agency, published in issue no. 11, reached second place, “Vorbild in Not” (Role Model in Straits) by Peter Schatz in STERN no. 01 attained third place.

Also on the podium in the category „Reportage photography of the year”: Sara Naomi Lewkowicz’s „Die Hölle daheim“ (The Hell at Home). The photo gallery about domestic violence was published in STERN no. 21 and was now honoured with bronze.

In addition to STERN Magazine, BEEF! and FLOW also belonged to the evening’s prizewinners. In the premiere class “Leadmagazine of the Year” the work of BEEF!-editor-in-chief Jan Spielhagen and his team – Birte Lindlahr, deputy editor- in-chief, Katharina Mechow, Art Direction, and Monique Dressel, head of the photographic editorial department – was honoured with silver; Gold went to the “SZ-Magazin”. Likewise the colleagues of FLOW around editor-in-chief Sinja Schütte were able to celebrate a silver medal: In the category “Newcomer Magazine of the year” the G+J title was voted on second place by the jury behind “Das Buch als Magazin”.

The Lead Awards have been presented since 1992. The reason for their high reputation in the media industry lies in the jury procedures: An application is not possible. Rather prizeworthy work is sought by a preliminary jury from all relevant magazines, newspapers and the web in a review process. These are then assessed in the context of the visual and content-related development in the media market. Subsequently they are submitted to a celebrity-studded main jury who decide about the awarding of the prizes.
