NRC turns 50!

Today marks fifty years since NRC Handelsblad, the Netherland’s leading quality newsbrand was first published. As a merger between Algemeen Handelsblad and De Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant, NRC Handelsblad was the Netherlands first quality newspaper. It’s goal then was to provide it’s readers with reliable, versatile information, without imposing judgement or bias. Fifty years later, this is still the heart of all NRC journalism. In doing so, NRC have continued to keep up with the changing reader habits. In 1995, NRC was the first national to launch a website followed by the first news app in 2009. In 2006, NRC launched a morning paper to complement the evening Handelsblad, with NRC Next.

NRC is today….

  • the most read quality newspaper in the Netherlands
  • has the highest number of UUs of all quality newsbrand websites
  • has seen 4 consecutive years of growth in reach (print and digital)
  • NRC subscribers have been subscribers for an average of 12.6 years
  • Premium cintent leads to excellent MOAT bechmarks: 80% more often for banner to be onscreen for more than 30 seconds and 35% more frequent interaction with banners

Now in 2020, it is time for renewal again. In addition to the read, NRC journalism is also being increasingly listened to, via their podcasts, and next month NRC will launch its own audio app with a wealth of premium journalistic content. In addition to the current podcasts of NRC Today, Haage Zaken (politics) and Onbehaarde Apen (science) listeners will soon find new podcasts about technology, major lawsuits and personal stories/opinion.
